I am grateful that we live in a country that has a day set aside each year to thank God for His blessings. Yes, I am well aware that many people see it as merely a day to eat lots of great food and watch football. But you and I both know that the real point is to thank God.
At Thanksgiving time, I am reminded of Psalm 9:1, “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” Recounting God’s wonderful deeds is what the day is about.
One of the attributes of those who don’t know God is their thanklessness. In speaking of those who are not followers of God, Romans 1:21 says, “They did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.” Thanklessness. It’s not to be a part of us.
Daniel in the Old Testament is a great example to us. He thanked the Lord often. “He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God” (Daniel 6:10). Daniel specifically set aside time each day to pray and give thanks. It makes a lot of sense when we recognize how good God has been to us.
As we make preparations for this special holiday, let’s remember the real point. Give thanks to the Lord!
