This is the first day of winter, the winter solstice. It is also the shortest day of the year. Actually, it has the same twenty-four hours (23.93 to be precise) as every other day, but there is a shorter time of daylight than any other day of the year.
Some dear friends of our family live across the street from us. We’ve been neighbors for years. They are all relatively tall and have always given me a hard time about being, as they put it, vertically challenged.
Some years ago our neighbor friends came to visit me on the first day of winter. Before leaving home, they put their younger children on the shoulders of the older ones, so they would all be taller than me. They mentioned that they took a shortcut on their way over, and they brought a gift of strawberry shortcake. My friends had come to celebrate Shortest Day with me.
It was a touching moment that I will never forget. And someday I’ll figure out how to get even. 🙂
